Teniendo en cuenta la nueva normativa antisísmica, la medición de las vibraciones sísmicas ambientales o ruido sísmico ha adquirido una notable importancia. El análisis de las mediciones de ruido sísmico puede llevarse a cabo con tres métodos: 1) Espectros de Fourier 2) Relaciones espectrales 3) Relaciones espectrales H/V.
Este último, que proporciona los resultados más fiables es famoso también como método HVSR (Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio) o método de Nakamura. La adquisición de los datos HVSR, realizable a través de los geófonos triaxiales de baja frecuencia, permite determinar con precisión la frecuencia característica de resonancia del sitio, parámetro imprescindible para el correcto dimensionamiento de los edificios antisísmicos. Los ensayos de microzonación sísmica a través del método de medición de las HVSR se han convertido en un instrumento integral y fundamental a la hora de diseñar edificios antisísmicos. Los datos adquiridos deberán considerarse durante la fase de diseño, actuando de manera que se puedan construir estructuras con diferente frecuencia de resonancia con respecto al terreno y evitando el efecto de doble resonancia, extremadamente peligroso para la estabilidad estructural de los edificios.
Desde una medida de frecuencia de resonancia del suelo es posible obtener una estimación del Vs de las coberturas, siempre que se conozca la profundidad de la capa que lo genera, o viceversa.
Dado que la estratigrafía Vs también se deriva de las pruebas MASW, combinar los resultados de ambas metodologías en el mismo sitio es un complemento importante de información y enlace mutuo, tanto en profundidad como en la superficie.
